Reuseolution: sustainable New Year’s resolutions in Birmingham. We are inviting people across the city to rethink how they consume, reuse what they already own, and build habits that support a greener, fairer Birmingham.
January is traditionally the month of fresh starts, bold resolutions; often the aftermath of overconsumption during the festive period. We invite you ‘detox’ and to buy nothing new, reconnect with your community, and rediscover the creativity, confidence, and joy that comes from making the most of what you already have.
We will be sharing tips on sustainable living including upcycling, clothes swaps, repair cafés, buying second hand, ethical fashion and zero waste living. These are exactly the ideas at the heart of Reuseolution.
How are you going to achieve your sustainable New Year’s Reuseolution?
We aim to encourage individuals, families, and communities to pause before purchasing and explore more sustainable alternatives.
Throughout January, participants are invited to:
- Use what they already own
- Repair rather than replace
- Borrow, swap, or buy second-hand
- Get creative through upcycling
- Share their progress and inspire others
It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress, accessibility, and showing that sustainable living can be practical, affordable, and sociable.
Why ‘Buying Nothing New’ Matters
The environmental impact of overconsumption, especially in fashion and household goods, is enormous.
Ecological footprinting shows that if everyone in the world consumed as much as the average person in western Europe, we’d need three planets to support us.
Did you know that by extending the life of clothing by just nine months can reduce its carbon, water, and waste footprint by 20–30%?!
That’s a huge impact from a relatively small change!
Fast fashion and throwaway culture aren’t just environmental issues; they’re social ones too. A sustainable Reuseolution, this New Year, challenges the idea that “new” automatically means “better” and instead celebrates repair, skill-sharing, and community solutions.
Two Community Events to Kick Things Off
To bring Reuseolution to life, we’re hosting two community-focused events in Sparkhill, in collaboration with Springfield Project.

👚 Re-stitch. Re-style. Reuseolution
This hands-on upcycling workshop is led by Rukhsana from Ecoraa, a designer with decades of experience in the textile industry championing upcycled fashion!
Participants will learn how to transform preloved shawl fabrics into a wearable desi jacket—building confidence, creativity, and practical upcycling skills along the way.

📍 The Springfield Centre, B13 9NY
🎟️ £1 contribution to join!
👥 Limited to 10 spaces
This session is perfect whether you’re new to upcycling or just looking for a great way to spend the afternoon with the local community and learn a new skill!
👶 Swap & Play
Swap & Play – our clothes swap & soft play event is about making sustainability accessible for everyone—especially families which is why we are offering a soft play area to keep the little ones entertained!

Mid-Month Motivation: Simple Reuse Tips
If “buy nothing new” feels challenging, you’re not alone. That’s why we’ve been sharing practical, realistic tips all month.
1. Always Check Second-Hand First ♻️
Charity shops, community markets, Vinted, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and local WhatsApp groups are treasure troves of quality items.
Apps like Olio and Nextdoor make it even easier to connect locally – your neighbour could be looking to sell or giveaway something that you need!
Often, second-hand items are:
- Better quality
- More affordable
- Already proven to last
And of course, our Swap & Play event on Saturday 17th Jan is a great way to start!
2. Get Creative with Upcycling 🎨
Upcycling doesn’t have to mean complex sewing projects!
Why not try:
– Adding patches or embroidery
-Dyeing tired clothing
-Re-styling items from the back of your wardrobe
– Or if you are looking to learn to sew – make sure you sign up for our FREE Re-stitch. Re-style. Reuseolution upcycling event on Tuesday 13th Jan!
Upcycling is increasingly “on trend,” but it’s also deeply traditional rooted in making do and valuing materials.
3. Mend Before You Replace 🧵
A missing button or small tear doesn’t require a shopping trip.
Birmingham is home to brilliant repair cafés, including:

You can find more in the local area near you here:
Find a repair group – Community Repair Network
Five minutes of repair can save money, resources, and frustration.
4. Borrow Instead of Buying 🔄
Let’s normalise borrowing.
For items you’ll only use once or twice—tools, equipment, occasion wear—ask friends or family, or visit a Library of Things or Share Shack, such as the one run by The Active Wellbeing Society in Ladywood and other areas in Birmingham
Knitting Neighbourhood Networks at the Share Shack – The Active Wellbeing Society
And for those of you that have particular interest in DIY, tools and specialist equipment but would find it unrealistic to purchase your own – why not join a membership with Maker Spaces such as Fizz Pop in Digbeth. They offer a space and a huge range of larger equipment and smaller items such as hand tools and sewing machines to their members.
Save money and resources – it’s a win win!
