Health and Happiness

Encouraging active, social, meaningful lives to promote good health and wellbeing is at the core of sustainability. Considering the amount of time we spend at work, it is essential to ensure that employees are supported in terms of wellbeing, both in and out of work.

How to make a change

Healthy, Active Lives

  • Encourage Active Travel: Implement a Cycle to Work scheme, or similar
  • Improve air quality and ventilation for indoor working spaces – houseplants are good for this, or if you can at any point then encourage staff to work outdoors
  • Maximise natural light wherever possible
  • Implement walking or outdoor meetings – Sitting for over 4 hours a day is bad for our bodies
  • Promote healthy eating and foster a sense of community with shared meals that bring people together – try sticking to a veggie menu
  • Allow opportunities for lunchtime walks and exploration

Social Lives

  • Arrange regular non-work get togethers
  • Get involved with local volunteering opportunities as a team
  • Implement a ‘staff-led’ strategy for One Planet Living, getting everyone involved

Mental Wellbeing

  • Offer mental health support for all employees and volunteers
  • Help employees work towards long-term goals
  • Foster an environment for open and honest discussion
  • Offer wellbeing-based employee benefits, such as: Employee Access Programmes for counselling, access to meditation apps e.g., Headspace, or discounted gym memberships
  • Appoint designated wellbeing leaders
  • Encourage REAL breaks, rather than employees eating and working simultaneously
  • Create a comfortable work environment such as: designated wellness or social spaces, providing healthy foods etc.
  • Consider professional wellbeing workshops
  • Allow for flexible routines and working patterns, so that staff and volunteers can optimise their time to best suit them

Example Actions

  • Plan (x) shared meals (x) times a week
  • Use the headspace free trial to try meditation
  • Appoint a wellbeing leader
