Living Sustainably: Travel

Together we can make a huge impact by making more sustainable choices. Everyone can do something. Think positive and achievable and you will make a difference, for you, and the planet.

Change the way you travel and stay active

Transport is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in the UK which is contributing to global warming and poor air quality. This is bad for our health and the planet. Consider walking, cycling or using public transport whenever you can. Every mile counts!

  • Choosing cycling or walking for short journeys – Not only will you save money on petrol and other travel costs, but it will enable you to see your neighbourhood differently, experience less traffic, cleaner air, and more joy. Keeping active will also help you feel happier and healthier.
Sustainable New Years Resolution. Walk, cycle, use public transport
  • Ask your workplace about the cycle to work scheme, this allows you to save up to 47% on a new bike and spread the cost over the year. For journeys like the weekly shop or the school run, maybe a cargo bike could be for you? Chat to Bike Foundry about Gear Shift, their community e-cargo bike hire project.
  • Leaving the car at home – Consider using public transport, lift sharing or try out Birmingham’s bike or scooter hire to travel across the city. Try using Citymapper, an app for planning journeys, including active travel and public transport with live updates and timings. You can also use the TFWM site or apps like the Trainline to find the cheapest travel ticketing options and find out about taking your bike on the train.
  • Choose low carbon travel for your holidays – Flying can be one of the biggest contributors to your carbon footprint. Flight Free UK and The Man in Seat 61 provide all the information you need on how to travel by train, bus, or ferry to almost every country in the world. You can also try a staycation and experience the amazing places and sights the UK has to offer
