The Benefits of Car Sharing:
Cutting Carbon and Costs
When people start sharing cars, their transport footprint can drop by as much as 40%. For those who choose not to buy a car at all and instead use car sharing, the reduction is even greater – around 85%.
We know that car sharing will not work for every household, but for many it can make a big difference. Sharing lifts can reduce your environmental impact while also cutting the amount you spend on petrol each month.
Building Greener Communities
As part of our Building Greener Communities project, our partners at The Springfield Project in Sparkhill are putting this into practice by encouraging their staff to share cars.
To support this, they have increased mileage claims by 5p per mile for shared journeys. This small change is helping their team choose lower carbon travel options.
More than the Environment
Car sharing is not just about lowering emissions. With fewer cars on the road, traffic is reduced, meaning shorter journeys and better air quality – both of which are good for our health.
There are also social benefits. Journeys become opportunities to connect with colleagues or friends, rather than time spent driving alone.
Getting Started
If your workplace does not yet have its own scheme, there are apps that can help you get started:
· Liftshare – useful for regular commutes.
· BlaBlaCar – ideal for long-distance carpool and coach journeys.
· CoWheels – great if you want to ditch your car all together and try a pay-as-you go car rental scheme.
