It’s amazing how quickly children grow! School uniforms can be a huge expense for families, but their are schemes to help. Here’s an example of one happening in South Birmingham.
Rubery Schools Community Swop Shop was set up to provide free school uniforms, PE kits, shoes, forest school clothes and anything else that may be needed. Anyone can donate or collect clothing from the Swop Shop. Donation drop off points can be found at Northfield Fire Station, Newstarts (New Frankley) and CC Balloons Shop (Rubery) but the organisation is looking to expand to other areas. Some of the local schools the Swop Shop provide uniforms for include:
- The Meadows (B31)
- Turves Green Boys’ (B31)
- Turves Green Girls’ (B31)
- Turves Green Primary (B31)
- Northfield Manor (B29)
- St Joseph’s (B30)
- Bellfield Infant (B31)
- Bellfield Junior (B31)
- Cofton (B31)
- Albert Bradbeer (B31)
According to WRAP (a charity working to reduce waste, develop sustainable products and use resources in an efficient way), it is estimated that £140 million worth of clothing goes into landfill each year! Before you throw away that school shirt or tunic, there may be someone else who could benefit from it.
