International Car Free Day Ride

We were excited to hear in June that Birmingham would take part in the International Car Free Day on 22 September. Aston Expressway would be closed to cars for 1 mile for events and activities celebrating Car Free Day.

Unfortunately, this event has now been postponed to next Spring. However, International Car Free Day is happening globally on 22 September, and we want to be part of it and for something to happen!

We have decided to make sure the city marks Car Free Day in a positive way and are suggesting as many people as possible take part in a climate emergency protest ride along the new blue cycle routes to show our discontentment at the lack of action on sustainability, despite the fact Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority declared a climate emergency in June 2019.

If you want to have your voice heard on the day, get on your bikes and use the new blue cycle routes. In the South of the city the A38 cycle route starts at the University of Birmingham gates opposite Bournbrook Road. In the North of the city the A34 cycle route starts at the corner of Heathfield Road and Birchfield Road. So, dust off your bike and join the celebration of International Car Free Day!

We will be on the A38 blue route cycling into town arriving at the Council House, Victoria Square for 11am. Why not join us outside the Council House with your bikes and banners. From 11.30am, we will meet in Wayland’s Yard on Bull Street for an hour’s informal drop-in session about cycling. Talk to us about finding the best routes for you to cycle to work and general tips about cycling.

Other ways to go car free on Sunday:

  • Organise your own bike ride
  • Use public transport
  • Go for a walk, jog, scoot, run, roller blade or sprint
