Green Jumper Day is taking place this year on 6 February 2026. A day to increase awareness of, and take action against, climate change. The Green Jumper Charity are asking everyone in the UK to turn down the heating, put on a jumper and save money. Started by the charity Green Jumper in 2021, the annual day gives schools, businesses and individuals a personal and practical way to play their part in making a difference for climate change.
Focusing on an easy, collective action which emphasises the link between energy use and its impact on the environment. Energy consumption through heating (as well as several other energy uses), has a strong carbon, and therefore climate change impact. Participants in Green Jumper Day display their green jumper while taking a step toward a more sustainable future by turning off their heating in the midst of winter for the whole day. This simple step can make a small difference individually, but a much larger difference collectively.
Anyone can participate in this day of both awareness and action. No extra equipment, drastic life changes, or specialised education is needed. Participants put on the extra layer of a noticeable and visible green jumper and turn down (or off) their heating for the day. This reduces energy consumption and the associated carbon emissions from the gas heating. A simple action that creates awareness of the impacts of energy use and shows how our normal, everyday actions can be a conscious decision for the climate.
If you don’t have a green jumper to wear don’t worry, put on an extra layer and accessorise in green any way you can. Take photos, share on social media and show the world that we can all make small changes and we can have fun whilst doing so.
If they can, individuals and businesses that take part in Green Jumper Day are also encouraged to donate to Green Jumper. Helping provide educational books and games to schools with important messages of climate change mitigation and sustainability, told in a fun way using animation and understandable messages.
You can also support and take action by donating to other climate related charities who are doing great work, raising awareness and providing climate education initiatives. Get involved this Green Jumper Day!
- As an individual: Simply turn down the heating and pop on a jumper, preferably green and donate to the Green Jumper Day charity or another climate-focused charity.
- For schools, get students and staff: Wear green jumpers and turn down the heating for a practical lesson on energy use and efficiency, carbon, and climate change.
- For businesses: Encourage employees to wear green jumpers, turn down or off the heating for the day, and make a corporate donation – perhaps even matching employees donations to climate-focused charities.
While turning down the heating may make a small difference in carbon emissions (and your own bills!), the collective action of thousands of people and businesses can create a noticeable lowering of our carbon emissions for that day. This is a tangible way to make a difference and realise the impact of our everyday actions on the environment.
