This week (12-16 May 2025) is Water Saving Week. We often think that water is ever-ready and abundant, it comes out of multiple taps in all of our homes. However, in the last few years we have heard of growing hose-pipe bans and by 2050, due to population rise, climate change and other reasons, we could need billions more litres of clean water everyday than we will have access to globally. In 2015, a charity called Waterwise started Water Saving Week. This raises awareness and inspires people to do what they can to save water both now and in the future. Becoming aware of how much water we are using is a vital part of our climate actions and responsibilities. Saving water can also lead to notable savings on our household bills.
What Can you do to help save water?
- Take a short shower instead of a bath once a week – Just by replacing one bath per week with a 4-minute shower, can give you £20 savings on your water and heating bills over a year. If you’re in a household with several people taking baths multiple times a week, this can add up quick. As well as saving gallons of water for future use. As I am out in the community, I often hear of teenagers taking 45-minute showers. One possible solution is to get them to listen to 2 songs while showering and then get out. If they need convincing, tell them that you can buy them an extra meal or shirt after 1 month of shorter showers.
- Use a water-efficient shower head – Water-efficient shower heads can save £100 over the course of a year on your water and heating bills and will also save gallons of water. This also applies to other appliances such as toilets and dishwashers.

- Collect rainwater – Install a water butt to collect, store and reuse water for your garden. You are getting this water for free and while it isn’t safe to drink it, it is the type of water that your flowers and vegetables are used to getting to grow.
- Fit an aerator – Aerators, like water-efficient shower heads, limit the amount of water that comes through your tap, without affecting the pressure or the feeling and can add up to around a £20 yearly savings. Aerators come in different shapes and sizes to affix to different taps. Measure the size of your tap to avoid going back and forth to the store multiple times for different sizes of aerator.
Water Saving Week is an important reminder of what we can do to save or waste earth’s most precious resource.
