ecobirmingham has launched our Sustainability Toolkit using One Planet Living® principles – your online guide to making everyday choices that are greener, healthier and fairer for you and your community. This blog explores what the toolkit is, how it works, and how you can use it to start your own Sustainability Action Plan.

What is the Sustainability Toolkit?
The Sustainability Toolkit is an online resource created by ecobirmingham, we are a sustainability charity dedicated to creating greener, fairer and healthier communities across Birmingham by enabling local people to take positive environmental action. We have built this toolkit around the internationally recognised One Planet Living® framework, which helps people and organisations think about how to live well within the earth’s limits.
Through the toolkit, you can explore key sustainability themes such as zero carbon energy, transport, food, health and happiness and more, and turn them into simple, practical actions you can take at home, on your street, and in your neighbourhood. It is designed to be accessible and flexible, whether you are just starting out or already well on your sustainability journey.
How the toolkit helps you take action
The Sustainability Toolkit shares how small, everyday changes add up to a big impact for people and the planet. The platform guides you through different sustainability principles and invites you to choose actions that feel interesting, realistic, and relevant to your lifestyle.
You can create a personalised Sustainability Action Plan by selecting the principles and actions that matter most to you, then save your plan online so you can return to it, track progress and add new actions over time. Whether you want to save water, reduce waste, or achieve zero carbon energy, the toolkit keeps everything in one place so you can stay motivated and organised.
Zero Carbon Energy
One of the key areas covered in the toolkit is Zero Carbon Energy, which is particularly important given the rising prices of energy and prevalence of fuel poverty in Birmingham. The toolkit explains how more energy efficient homes and cleaner energy sources can both lower bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
Practical suggestions include buying energy efficient appliances such as LED lightbulbs, energy-efficient kettles or air fryers, and using low cost measures like window insulation, radiator reflectors and draught excluders to keep heat in. It also helps you to consider switching to a green energy supplier that offers 100% renewable electricity, installing solar panels if this is practical, and improving home insulation to cut heat loss from your roof, walls, and floors.

Using data and support to stay on track
The toolkit encourages you to use tools you may already have, like a smart meter, to measure how much energy you use before and after you make changes, helping you see the real savings in both energy and money. Seeing these numbers change can be a powerful motivator to keep going and to involve others in your household.
If you are unsure where to start with larger steps such as insulation, the guidance points you to independent resources that explain different types of insulation and typical costs. You can contact ecobirmingham’s energy advisers for free tailored advice and even a home visit.
Switching energy providers to one that offers 100% green energy could significantly reduce your carbon impact, without increasing your bills. Ecotricity and Octopus Energy are two examples of suppliers that provide this. You can get quotes directly from their websites.
If you would like some more information on the topic of zero carbon energy, please Get in touch and one of our energy advisers will be get back to you to discuss your situation and help find the best possible solutions for you.
As more people across Birmingham use the toolkit, create plans and share ideas, the city moves closer to being a greener, fairer, and healthier place to live. Together, step by step, every action – from cooking in a slow cooker to insulating your home – helps build the sustainable future that Birmingham deserves. For people and the planet!
