Earth Day will take place on Wednesday, 22 April 2026. This year marks the 56th anniversary of the global environmental movement and a time when we start to ask, what are your hopes for the earth both now and in the future? How can you be kinder to the planet today and going forward?
Help make your workplace more sustainable.
Not everyone has the ability to make workplace-altering decisions to reduce energy consumption, but even smaller changes can make a big difference. To make your workplace more energy efficient for Earth Day, consider the following options.
- Turn off devices to reduce standby power consumption. It seems an obvious solution – because it is! How many outlets are left on overnight. An average household can save £45/year by turning off all outlets overnight. Is your office using more?
- Make the switch to LED lightbulbs. They save £3-4 each year for every bulb and do not cost much to get started.
- Adjust the thermostats. Schedule the temperature settings. Even the leakiest buildings can retain heat for some time. Turn off the heating at least 30 minutes before the end of your workday.
- Use the blinds or curtains to prevent overheating and open a window if possible for a cooler breeze.
- Seal any air leaks. Putting thermal strips around doors and draught excluder around windows and other gaps can make a big difference to feeling warmer as it keeps out the cool, draughty air and keeps the warmer air inside.
- Promote a paperless office. Do you need to print everything to share with co-workers? Use digital solutions like Google Drive to reduce paper consumption as much as possible.
- Encourage recycling. Clearly label and announce where recycling stations are.
- Donate or recycle old electronics. Recycle old keyboards, printer cartridges and other electronics to conserve natural resources and reduce pollution. Many charity shops will take electronics and most the Household Recycling Centres in Birmingham also take donations of unwanted-but-still-working electrical items. Also, some retailers will take and recycle your old items if you buy new from them.
- Form a green team. Create a group of passionate employees who can help implement green practices in the office. They may even have their own ideas about how to save carbon and save the company money in the process.
- Encourage remote work. Working from home reduces transport emissions and your office’s energy bill, as well as generally creating a more inclusive environment for workers.
