Let’s Get Pollinating!

Let’s Get Pollinating was a workshop delivered by The Patchwork Meadow and Natural England on Thursday 12th February at Birmingham Settlement’s Nature & Wellbeing Centre.

The workshop showed us, and other organisations, activities that could be used to introduce wildflower meadows to help increase biodiversity across Birmingham and support wellbeing though connecting with nature.

During the Let’s get pollinating workshop we took part in some activities that were designed to help encourage wildlife and nature to thrive, such as making seed balls and egg box meadows which could be planted in the ground, allowing wildflowers to grow even in the smallest of areas such as around trees and in raised beds.

Throughout the morning, whilst taking part in the activities we also learnt about biodiversity and pollinators such as bees and hoverflies, and the ways that planting wildflowers and creating pocket meadows can benefit them.

I really enjoyed learning about how I could create a pocket meadow and it allowed me to think about how I can help pollinators thrive in my own garden or in my local area. It also allowed me to consider how I could create an area of wildflowers in the wider community, for example creating one in my school or even planting wildflowers around trees.

Planting wildflowers not only benefits pollinators but can also have a positive impact on our health and wellbeing as they can bring colour and wildlife to urban areas and allow people to reconnect with nature.

ecobirmingham offer plenty of opportunities for families and individuals across the city to get involved in nature connection activities. Check out our events page for more information and get involved.
